(The Hosting News) – The key platform known as NVP (Network Virtualization Platform) used by a variety of web hosts including Rackspace and DreamHost is included under a big transaction. On Monday, virtualization provider VMware announced that it was buying NVP operator Nicira, expanding its portfolio to include a number of new virtualized solutions.
While primarily known for NVP, Nicira’s offerings pertain to areas including cloud, OpenStack and more. “The combination of Nicira and VMware brings together two pioneering teams, and gives customers the industry leading SDN solution for any cloud environment, on any hypervisor in the enterprise and with Service Providers,” said Martin Casado, CTO of Nicira in a press release.
VMware’s acquisition will close sometime during the second quater of this year awaiting regulatory approval. Accounting for $1.05 billion, the matter is just one of many recent developments for VMware, a company that just announced a CEO change last week.
Current EMC Information CEO Paul Gelsinger is set to assume the top spot at the virtualization provider in the near future. The move should be a smooth transition, considering VMware operates as an EMC subsidiary. Outgoing VMware executive Paul Maritz will take on a newly created position at EMC.
VMware recently detailed second quarterly financial results for this year. The company said it earned a revenue amounting for $1.12 billion during that time, signaling substantial increase of 22% from the same time last year.
Starting August 26, VMware will begin its VMworld Conference in San Francisco, California. That event will be followed up in October by a similar conference located in Barcelona. The events focus on networking, education and collaboration.
