(The Hosting News) – Verisign, the global leader in domain names, this month released its latest Domain Name Industry Brief – detailing 2012’s fourth quarter domain registrations.
“The fourth quarter of 2012 closed with a base of more than 252 million domain name registrations across all Top-Level Domains (TLDs), an increase of 6.1 million domain names, or 2.5 percent over the third quarter of 2012. Registrations have grown by 26.6 million, or 11.8 percent, year over year,” commented the company.
Among TLDs applied for, .COM suffixes remained the most popular, accounting for just over 100 million of the registrations while others to receive high ranks included .de, .net, .uk, and .org.
Overall, in around one year’s time, the domain landscape has expanded by 19.6 million.
Meanwhile, renewal rates for .com and .net were said to be 72.9% – representative of a small increase compared to the previous quarter.
