(The Hosting News) – Microsoft recently confirmed that Kevin Timmons, the company’s general manager for Data Center services has left the company to pursue other business opportunities.
While Microsoft would not confirm which company Timmons left for, the former data manager is expected to assume a key role in the further development of Apple’s cloud computing infrastructure.
Joining Microsoft in 2009, Timmons successfully supervised the construction of new data centers in Illinois and Ireland. Before working for Microsoft, Timmons served as Yahoo’s Vice President of Operations.
Apple most recently acquired a new data center in North Carolina and finalized the purchase of 12 petabytes of server storage to assist with iTune video downloads. Within the next couple years, Apple is expected to begin construction on additional data centers.
Apple’s addition of Timmons is seen by analysts as a move to ramp up its cloud computing infrastructure while facing competition from the likes of Microsoft’s Azure Cloud.
