Intel may be under a larger threat of competition than it has experienced in many years. The news coming from the Open Commute Summit held in Santa Clara included Microsoft announcing an ARM chip. They have been working with Qualcomm and Cavium on ARM server designs to run many of the company’s cloud services.
Unlike past announcements from Google and Facebook, this announcement from Microsoft has real potential. They believe ARM servers could become a huge part of their cloud data center capacity by replacing about half of the existing servers. This is a big announcement from the second-largest cloud providers in the world.
