(The Hosting News) – Data center and colocation provider Equinix recently opened a new data center in Sydney, Australia, expanding on the company’s already established presence in the city (Equinix already had 2).
For $65 million dollars, the opening is just the first phase of the new center’s operation. Called “SY3,” the facility will provide storage services to various companies. With its addition to the two other data centers, Equinix has created network access to over 60 providers, a pretty impressive statistic.
Commenting on the matter in a press release provided by the company, Equinix Australia managing director Darren Mann stated, “We are experiencing a lot of demand from cloud and financial services companies. In the financial services sector the market requires the highest levels of reliability and lowest possible network latency for applications such as high frequency trading.”
The facility already has some clients including the likes of Cloud Central, a cloud computing storage provider that mostly serves IT providers and software developers in the country.
While the addition of SY3 strengthens an already strong Equinix presence in the Australia, it appears the company is already looking to expand in country. According to Computer World Australia, Samuel Lee, the company’s president cited expansion priorities for Exquinix in the Asia Pacific Region, most notably the possibility of a new location in Melbourne. Other locations Lee pointed to included India, China, and Osaka, Japan.
Concerning data centers, the Australian market has made plenty of news lately. Late last month, data center solution provider Digital Realty Trust announced its intention to enter the Australian market by acquiring land in Sydney.
Meanwhile, other reports have pointed toward the possibility of Amazon Web Services expanding in the country. If AWS does decide to expand in the area, it remains possible that they could work with a provider like Equinix.
Equinix was founded in 1998 and currently operates various ITX data centers worldwide. For more information on the matter, visit: http://www.equinix.com/company/news-and-events/press-releases/Equinix-Opens-International-Business-Exchange-Data-Centre-In-Sydney/
