(The Hosting News) – The internet protocol platform known as IPv6 has experienced significant growth within the past year, this according to a recent study sponsored by Infoblox.
The actual census was carried out by the Measurement Factory.
Specifically, within a year, there has been a “1,900%” growth of domains compatible with IPv6 which fall under TLD’s such as .com, .org, .net, according the report.
What’s even more interesting is what’s driving the IPv6 support. According to Infoblox, web host Go Daddy’s support for the internet protocol platform played a significant role in the shift. Go Daddy remains one of the world’s largest domain registrars.
IPv6 supports more IP address room as compared to the old IPv4 platform, which has seen its availability dwindle in recent years as more new websites hit the internet.
The IANA (Internet Assigned Numbers Authority) allocated remaining IPv4 addresses to regional registries earlier this year.
The report also emphasized the importance of businesses making their resources IPv6 compatible due to increasing users who will access the internet via IPv6 supported devices.
Commenting on the matter in a press release, Infoblox IPv6 Center of Excellence GM Cricket Liu stated, “If your external presence only supports IPv4, then the only devices that can communicate with you will be those with IPv4 addresses.”
“To the growing population of pure IPv6 devices, you’re invisible. We can’t ignore the emerging competitive advantages of IPv6, but we also don’t need to adopt IPv6 in one great, costly leap. Focus first on providing IPv6 to the outside world and then work inward in stages. Do this and IPv6 deployment will be relatively painless and prove to be a valuable long-term investment for business growth,” Liu continued.
Meanwhile, the study also found that countries leading the way in IPv6 support include the United States, the Czech Republic, and France.
During a separate event in June, various internet participants tested the platform by deploying IPv6 supported servers. And overall, the test went smoothly.
