(The Hosting News) – Tech giant Google on Wednesday unveiled a big change for Gmail: New inbox categories that sort incoming mail into sections including Primary, Social, Promotions and Updates.
The categories run horizontally as tabs across the header of Gmail, allowing users to easily navigate between them.
“We get a lot of different types of email: messages from friends, social notifications, deals and offers, confirmations and receipts, and more. All of these emails can compete for our attention and make it harder to focus on the things we need to get done. Sometimes it feels like our inboxes are controlling us, rather than the other way around,” stated Google Product Manager Itamar Gilad via the Gmail blog.
More customization is at the heart of the new Gmail experience. With it, users are able to drag and drop messages in certain categories along with setting emails from specific senders to always appear via one category. Starring incoming mail also allows messages to appear in the primary box.
Google is rolling out the update at a gradual rate. The new version isn’t necessary and users can easily disable the option.
Gmail is often considered the world’s most widely used email service.
