(The Hosting News) – The value of bitcoins has fallen following an attack by hackers against services providing the popular online currency, a BBC report noted Thursday.
Exchange MTGox was recently slowed down by DDoS following a previous incident with Bitcoin provider Instawallet that caused it to indefinitely halt operations.
“Our database was fraudulently accessed, due to the very nature of Instawallet it is impossible to reopen the service as-is,” read a statement via Instawallet’s homepage.
The unfortunate drop occurs after a promising period in which the currency’s value actually strengthened. According to the BBC, one bitcoin was recently worth as much as $142 – capping a rise from just $90 bucks.
“Due to a DDOS attack, our website was down for a moment,” tweeted MtGox.com.
The idea of virtualized currency has increasingly gained traction within the recent past. Just last month, web host Namecheap announced it’d be accepting bitcoins as currency.
