CloudLinux was developed and launched with the goal of helping hosting providers make shared hosting more predictable. While a traditional OS used in shared hosting assigns hardware resources such as RAM and CPU on an as-needed basis, CloudLinux allows hosting companies to assign fixed resource allocations to each individual account. As a result, servers can contain the maximum number of shared hosting plans without the risk of a few users overusing hardware power. In 2012, CloudLinux added support for disk input-output (disk I/O) limits, physical memory limits, and a number of processes limits, giving hosting providers more ways to control how shared hosting plans are used. In addition, the much-requested feature of per-package limits became available for the first time, enabling hosting providers to sell tiered web hosting services with pre-defined resource limits.
“At the core of CloudLinux, we added several new limits in 2012, as well as releasing CageFS 4.0, the latest version of virtualized per customer file system that improves server security” says Seletskiy. “We also added SecureLinks to protect against hackers that use symbolic links to access files. While these changes do not overhaul the existing OS our customers know and love, they refine the experience to give hosting companies even more control over their plans, along with significantly improved security. In addition to these changes, which were largely the result of requests from our users, we improved some useful tools that make up the overall CloudLinux experience, and even added some new functionality.”
CloudLinux enables hosting providers to control a wide range of resource limits, but there is also a need to control other components related to shared hosting. While hosting providers require control over disk I/O, RAM, and CPU, it is also essential that dynamic web development tools, such as MySQL and PHP, can be configured and customized for each user. In 2012, CloudLinux released a new, simplified version of its MySQL Governor software, which hosting companies can use to control how webmasters use MySQL databases. In addition, CloudLinux launched PHP Selector. PHP Selector lets customers select which version of PHP they need, allowing some shared hosting customers to run their older legacy applications effectively, while neighboring accounts can use a more recent PHP release. Seletskiy believes a busy 2012 has delivered direct results in terms of company success.
“Throughout 2012, we worked hard to give hosting providers even more of the features they need,” says Seletskiy. “Looking back, we acquired1,000 new customers with licenses, which brought us to 10,000 servers, doubling our revenue with growth of 115 percent.
