(The Hosting News) – Facebook is having to dig deep in its pockets to pay users back for using their likeness in ads.
614 thousand Facebook members are set to receive $15 a piece after their names and pictures were used through the top social network’s Sponsored Story ads without permission.
And although 150 million were ultimately affected, just 614 thousand applied to receive the compensation when informed of the issue earlier this year.
Facebook, meanwhile, will also have to pay $20 million to privacy organizations over the incident.
According to a BBC report, U.S. District Judge Richard Seeborg noted the payments were “relatively small” while also acknowledging it had not been proven that claimants filing against Facebook had been “harmed in any meaningful way.”
Despite that, it’s estimated that the top social network made $73 million off the Sponsored Stories.
