That particular question was recently on the minds of U.S. lawmakers as eight congressmen addressed concerns via a letter.

The move comes from the Congressional privacy caucus.

“We are curious whether this new technology could infringe on the privacy of the average American,” stated the letter addressed to Google CEO Larry Page, according to the BBC.

Among the concerns are that Google Glass could “unintentionally collect data” and device features such as facial recognition technology, the company’s privacy policy, application approvals, data storage and more.

Google was previously criticized in the past for its use of unencrypted wireless networks for data collection – something that made news headlines in 2010.

Project director Steve Lee previously signaled that Google seriously took privacy into account when developing the project.

Google Glass isn’t available for general use, instead being available to select users whom Google is hoping will help develop apps for the emerging platform.

(The Hosting News) - AlteredScale, a provider of mission critical data center solutions, today announced that they have chosen Norland Managed Services to operate and maintain their data center at 601 West Polk. Located in an historic, 100-year-old structure just west of the Loop, the building features 25,000 square feet of raised floor and the largest contiguous colocation space in downtown Chicago.

“Despite being one of North America’s most strategic data center markets, Chicago has suffered from a lack of capacity in the central business district,” said Kevin Francis, President of AlteredScale. “With the completion of phase one at 601 W Polk we are excited to serve the colocation needs of enterprises throughout Chicago and the Midwest. AlteredScale provides IT capacity in a convenient downtown location.”

601 Polk is situated on the primary fiber-optic ring serving downtown Chicago, and near multiple power substations, making it a sought-after locale for housing mission critical systems. In addition to the 25,000 square feet of data center space on the first floor, 601 Polk also includes 28,000 square feet of expansion space available for data center and office use.

AlteredScale chose Norland Managed Services, Inc. to operate and maintain the critical facilities as the company is a leading provider of facility operations and management for data centers throughout the world. In addition, AlteredScale has selected Chicago-based Tiburon Security Inc., who custom built security protocols and staffs guard personnel for the site.

Built more than 100 years ago, the 601 Polk building was at one point, a warehouse for the retailer Marshall Fields and was later slated to be a “carrier hotel” for a telecommunications company. Purchased by Pi Data Holdings, LLC in 2011, the building was renovated extensively and turned from raw industrial space into modern, flexible data center space.

About Altered Scale

AlteredScale provides mission-critical data center solutions for businesses in downtown Chicago. Their 100-year-old restored building, 601 W Polk, is a multi-tenant facility that offers a range of flexible data center services from private suite to carrier-neutral colocation. The facility provides unparalleled access to power and connectivity, allowing AlteredScale customers in Chicago and beyond to easily scale their IT operations

(The Hosting News) – PEER 1 Hosting, the global web hosting provider, today announces the successful achievement of its PCI audit, which sees its London and Los Angeles data centres become PCI compliant; increasing its line-up of PCI compliant data centres to 6 globally. The audit allows PEER 1 Hosting to offer secure hosted PCI environments to customers on both sides of the Atlantic.

PEER 1 Hosting carried out the annual audit of its PCI environment to maintain and extend continued compliance. The audit review process coincided with PEER 1 Hosting increasing the number of geographical PCI compliant locations available. As such, the successful audit is an important addition for PEER 1 Hosting customers requiring a PCI environment in multiple locations for disaster recovery purposes – especially those operating in the financial services and eCommerce sectors that require highly secure hosting environments.

Fabio Banducci, president & CEO, PEER 1 Hosting, says: “We have seen a marked increase in customers requesting PCI solutions, with banks and associated payment gateway providers increasingly requiring this as standard. As a company we offer a consultative approach and understand the differing requirements that customers have, especially with something as complex as PCI Compliance.

“We understand PCI Compliance because we have gone through the process ourselves. We have longstanding customers using our PCI environment, and so the move to make our London and Los Angeles data centres PCI compliant shows our continued commitment to having the most security-aware and educated organisation and staff.

“We have invested in hardened operating systems necessary for PCI builds, and have put in place an on-going refinement of PCI sales processes, assisting customers with understanding complex PCI requirements – all part of powering the potential of businesses online.”

PEER 1 Hosting has a growing team of dedicated security professionals whose sole aim is to ensure continued compliance for PEER1 and solutions and services, making it easier for customers looking to achieve PCI compliance. This commitment was reflected by the organisation recently when the entire team undertook the Security Awareness Training.

Disclaimer:

PEER 1Hosting provides customers with a fully audited and maintained PCI Environment for customers to host their PCI Solution in. PEER 1 Hosting also offers a range of dedicated and managed services that can assist a customer in achieving PCI Compliance.

However PEER 1 Hosting is unable to guarantee that a customer will achieve PCI Compliance as this only depends on the customer’s internal and external security practices that are not within PEER 1 Hosting’s domain to manage.

About PEER 1 Hosting

PEER 1 Hosting is one of the world’s leading web hosting providers, specialising in Managed Hosting, Dedicated Servers, Colocation and Cloud Services. Based in Vancouver, Canada, with European operations headquartered in Southampton, UK, the company has been serving commercial customer needs since 1999.

As your blog grows in popularity, you will undoubtedly be faced with the problem of increased traffic. You might ask: how on earth is that a problem? In terms of increased readers and possibly higher ad revenues, it is not, but you will also have to deal with the higher server loads and potentially slower website speed. One way to optimize your blog is to use a script to combine and compress your CSS and Javascript files.

How it works

Most modern websites use Javascript to add functionality such as animations and dynamic actions on pages that do not require reloading. They use CSS files to streamline their style across multiple pages. In both cases, it is better to keep this information in separate files (i.e. example.js and style.css) rather than inputting all of the code into the HTML file. You can further cut down on the server load by using a script like “Minify” to combine and compress multiple CSS and Javascript files, which many websites now have.

What to Use

Minify is a PHP web application that uses gzip (defalte) to compress and send the contents of the files. It also removes unnecessary spaces for the best possible optimization and smallest size. All modern web browsers can handle gzip deflation, so it is an ideal solution.

If you prefer not to install your own script, there are also some online services that will do it for you, such as:

http://compressor.ebiene.de/

http://www.cssoptimiser.com/

For a manual approach to combining CSS and Javascript files, see this online tutorial.

(The Hosting News) – One of the core public policy principles of the i2Coalition is the belief that a multistakeholder process is essential in any discussion about the Internet governance process. The i2Coalition has taken an active role globally in support of this ideal. A multistakeholder process is critical in ensuring that the Internet continues to be an engine for economic growth and innovation.

Members of the U.S. House of Representatives reaffirmed those sentiments earlier this week by unanimously passing H.R. 1580, legislation reiterating U.S. policy “to preserve and advance the successful multistakeholder model that governs the Internet.”

The bill was sponsored by Rep. Greg Walden (R-OR) and comes in anticipation of the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) in Geneva, where Internet governance will be one of the main debates. As we saw at the ITU’s 2012 World Conference on International Telecommunications in Dubai last December, a multistakeholder model is needed to engage in any substantive discussion about the future of the Internet.

We applaud House members for their unanimous, bipartisan support of this important legislation and look forward to continuing to work with members of Congress in support of an inclusive process in which all stakeholders participate to ensure an open and free Internet.

“Google Compute Engine provides a fast, consistently high-performance environment for running virtual machines. Later today, you’ll be able to go online to cloud.google.com and start using Compute Engine,” stated Google’s Urs Hölzle via a blog post.

In addition to the move, the company also announced ISO 27001:2005 international security certification for Compute Engine along with other platforms including Google Cloud Storage and Google App Engine.

Among Compute Engine’s features are sub-hour billing, shared-core instances, advanced routing and persistent disks that support 10TB per volume.

Meanwhile, the tech giant also announced PHP runtime integration with Google App Engine along with a non-relational data solution called Google Cloud Datastore.

The new offerings could help Google compete more directly against Amazon Web Services.

(The Hosting News) - Canadian Web Hosting joins the OpenStack Foundation as a corporate sponsor and sets date for new web hosting and cloud hosting services built on OpenStack software. The summer launch will expand Canadian Web Hosting’s existing Canadian Cloud Hosting services and provide customers with a feature rich, highly repeatable, massively scalable cloud based in Canada.

Canadian Web Host and Cloud Hosting provider Canadian Web Hosting has announced its commitment to support the development of OpenStack®, the open source software for building public, private and hybrid clouds, and is now a corporate sponsor of the OpenStack Foundation.

By becoming a corporate sponsor of OpenStack, Canadian Web Hosting is joining a community of more than 850 unique organizations who are committed to building cloud architecture based on open source software and open standards.

Canadian Web Hosting has been integrating OpenStacks Cloud Operating System into their existing Canadian Cloud Hosting infrastructure including the Compute, Networking and Storage services that are accessible through OpenStacks dashboard giving users an easy web interface to automatically provision cloud-based resources in Canada. Canadian Web Hosting will provide both monthly server and storage services, and hourly usage billing, to give customers the flexibility they need to manage their resources. With the summer release, companies and their development teams looking to benefit from OpenStack’s high-performance cloud environment without the typical vendor lock, will have immediate access to a system that delivers repeatability, usability and massive scalability to its users. With the promise of OpenStack, and its open standards for both public and private clouds, companies in and outside of Canada will benefit from the new open source cloud computing platform that delivers easy to use infrastructure-as-a-service, while benefiting from Canada’s strict regulations to protect theirdata and privacy.

“OpenStack gives us the ability to continue supporting the open source community that has been a big part of our company since 1998. More importantly, we will be doing something a bit different by not only offering our corporate support behind the platform but also reaching out to our customers and working with them to join our efforts in increasing the footprint of Canadian Web Hosting within the community and supporting several of the interrelated projects within the platform. It’s a unique proposition and we are excited to be working with our customer’s hand-in-hand to bring these cutting edge technologies to Canada,” said Matt McKinney, Director at Canadian Web Hosting.

“We are excited to welcome Canadian Web Hosting to the OpenStack community and look forward to advancing the OpenStack mission with their support,” said Mark Collier, COO of the OpenStack Foundation. “As our community continues to grow globally, we are thrilled to see the innovative solutions Canadian Web Hosting and other members of the community continue to bring to market, helping to deliver new open source solutions to the enterprise and produce the best cloud software in the industry.”

Back in March of 2013, Canadian Web Hosting expanded its Canadian Cloud Hosting services to include multiple cloud server locations across Canada including Vancouver, BC and Toronto, ON. “The purpose behind our cloud services was always to give customers an easy-to-use, highly reliable cloud hosting environment that enables companies to meet their corporate governance requirements,” said Matt McKinney.
