(The Hosting News) – Journalists have been the target of state-sponsored hacking attacks, says Google security engineers, with 20 of the top 25 news organizations having been targeted.
Among the many recent hacking targets, journalists were “massively over-represented” with many of the hackers working for, or in support of ,the government, says Google security engineer Shane Huntley in a conference in Singapore on Friday.
“If you’re a journalist or a journalistic organization we will see state-sponsored targeting and we see it happening regardless of region, we see it from all over the world both from where the targets are and where the targets are from,” said Huntley in an interview with Reuters.
According to Reuters, the researchers said that the tech company “tracks the state actors that attack our users”, although failed to go into further detail.
In the past year, numerous U.S. news websites have been hacked, including Forbes, the New York Times, and the Financial Times.
Research shows that the amount of media attacks that has been reported was significantly lower than those that have been unreported.
Recently Chinese hackers gained access to a major Western news organization through a questionnaire emailed to staff that contained malware, which is how most attacks are orchestrated.
“This is the tip of the iceberg,” Marquis-Boire said regarding that amount of recent hacking attacks.
“A lot of news organizations are just waking up to this.”
