(The Hosting News) – In an effort to help prepare Windows XP customers for the move to a “modern operating system”, Microsoft announced today that it would be launching a free file transfer tool this month.
The transfer tool, PCmover Express for Windows XP, copies users files and settings from XP to a new device running on Windows 7, 8, or 8.1.
“This tool will copy your files, music, videos, email and user profiles and settings from your old PC to your new device, transferring across your home or work network, and even enables Windows XP users to customize exactly what they want to bring over to their new device,” stated Microsoft marketing communications manager, Brandon LeBlanc, in a Windows blog.
Starting this week, PCmover Express will be available to download for free from WindowsXP.com and its premium version, PCmover Professional, will be discounted by 60% from Microsoft’s partner Laplink, cutting the price from $59.95 to $23.95.
Additionally, XP customers using the Home or Professional versions will be receiving notifications starting on March 8th reminding users that support will end for Windows XP on April 8th.
“The notification will include a link to our Windows XP End of Support website where Windows XP users can find all the information they need on the end of support for Windows XP and what it means and how they can stay protected against security risks and viruses after April 8th.”
On the 8th of every month, the notification will return, unless turned off by the user.
