Net Neutrality Debate Continues to Raise Concerns
(The Hosting News) – The Federal Communications Commission’s (FCC) latest proposal opens the door for broadband providers to charge websites for faster service, thus ending the Internet as we know it. The move could end open Internet access and has the potential to privatize the Internet into a public utility like system.
Tech expert Karl Volkman of SRV Network explains, “Net neutrality is a heated debate for both sides. Those in favor are concerned that without net neutrality, costs will skyrocket for everyone and large companies will have unfair advantages. While those opposing net neutrality worry about overreaching government control and unfair pricing.”
Volkman continues “Granted that most businesses who have their websites in-house are limited by the bandwidth of their Internet drop, but this action indicates the potential for a prioritization of certain customers’ traffic over others. The idea of a ‘fast lane’ for those who can pay more and want faster access is a threat to the Internet and can greatly hinder startups and Internet innovation in general. Conversely, if you are the broadband or network owners, then innovation for faster infrastructure may be hindered by keeping net neutrality in place. Regardless of which side you are on, the FCC’s new rules will ultimately have a huge impact on the future of the Internet.”
