Atlanta, Georgia – (The Hosting News) – October 27, 2005 – Web host and Internet service provider (ISP), EarthLink, has been awarded an exclusive franchise to build out the Wi-Fi broadband network for the City of Anaheim, California.
Once the contract between the City and EarthLink is approved, deployment of the 50-square-mile, citywide Wi-Fi mesh network will begin in a phased approach. In the first phase, EarthLink will construct a two-square-mile proof-of-concept area for testing and analysis. The remainder of the city’s network will be completed by the fourth quarter of 2006.
According to Donald Berryman, Executive Vice President of EarthLink, ”The City of Anaheim is one of the premier destinations for business and pleasure on the West Coast, and deploying citywide wireless broadband only reinforces this image to residents and visitors. This solution will provide an alternative to traditional high- speed Internet offerings and give users an affordable option to stay connected no matter when and no matter where they are in Anaheim.”
Anaheim Mayor, Curt Pringle added, ”This is only the first step toward making Anaheim a truly wireless City and I am thrilled that we, as a city, will soon have this amenity available to our residents, businesses and visitors. By offering innovations such as wireless high-speed broadband connectivity with a quality provider such as EarthLink, I believe you will see other high-tech businesses use Anaheim as a test-bed for their emerging technology as well.”
The network will provide inexpensive, high-speed Internet access for residents and visitors to the City of Anaheim. It will also enable municipal employees to be more efficient in their jobs by allowing them to complete their work in the field without having to return to an office and a traditional landline to complete their tasks.
The network will be ‘open access’ so that multiple, competing providers can offer their services to consumers and businesses.
Finally, for small businesses Anaheim’s wireless network will provide an alternative for broadband connectivity, such as an affordable wireless T-1 solution. EarthLink will deploy Tropos Networks’ (http://www.tropos.com) MetroMesh Wi-Fi routers on light poles throughout the city that will enable wireless data connectivity between consumers and the Internet. The Tropos system forms a wireless mesh, intelligently routing data to produce the best possible user experience. The network will be operated and optimized using Tropos Control, a configuration, monitoring and maintenance tool.
Ron Sege, CEO of Tropos Networks explained, ”We are very excited to be working with EarthLink to deliver Wi-Fi service to the citizens of Anaheim. Anaheim’s vision of affordable broadband access will be realized with the combination of EarthLink’s stellar service delivery organization and Tropos’ comprehensive MetroMesh architecture, which provides the tools necessary for fast, low-cost and simple metro-scale Wi-Fi service delivery.”
