Google, eBay, Yahoo! Join Symantec Antifraud Community
Cupertino, California – (The Hosting News) – May 1, 2006 – An extensive antifraud community where members contribute and receive fraudulent web site addresses for alerting and filtering across a broad range of solutions has been launched by Symantec Corp.
The Symantec Phish Report Network includes RSA Security, eBay, and Wells Fargo, who contribute URLs they have identified as fraudulent web sites to the network, with eBay’s contributions including information from its subsidiary, PayPal.
Symantec then collects the data and distributes it to other network members such as Google, Yahoo!, and Netscape. These members use the data as part of their solutions and services to alert end users or filter access to fraudulent web sites, in an effort to better protect consumers and businesses from phishing threats.
RSA Security’s participation includes information from their cross-bank collaborative eFraudNetwork community and FraudAction anti-phishing service, which includes data from more than 100 financial institutions, such as key FraudAction customer Visa USA.

According to Symantec’s most recent Internet Security Threat Report, one of the most comprehensive sources of Internet threat data in the world, 7.92 million daily phishing attempts were identified during the last half of 2005, an increase of more than the 5.70 million attempts per day in the first half of 2005. Phishing attacks attempt to deceive users into revealing confidential information for financial gain and represent one of the many types of cybercrime affecting businesses and consumers today.

By submitting data to the Symantec Phish Report Network, contributing companies benefit from the convenience of funneling fraudulent URLs to a single location where it is aggregated and distributed to other network members for alerting and filtering in their applications. The Symantec Phish Report Network offers a continuous, accurate source of fraudulent phishing URLs that members leverage to preserve their brand image, protect their customers, and fuel their own antifraud efforts.
The Symantec Phish Report Network is intended to provide insight into the Internet security landscape. Symantec Global Intelligence Network consists of more than 150 million desktop antivirus sensors; 40,000 intrusion detection and firewall sensors; and 4,300 monitored and managed security devices worldwide.
