San Antonio, Texas
– (The Hosting News) – December 12, 2006 – Managed web hosting services provider, Rackspace Managed Hosting, is assisting the City of San Antonio’s Economic Development Department, by creating a Technical Hiring Boot Camp, to fill the hosting company’s numerous technical job openings.
Rackspace created its own program to develop individuals’ technical and troubleshooting skills needed to support Rackspace’s customers, with a 10-week course at Rackspace University, to teach qualified candidates the intricacies of the managed hosting business through technical topics such as operating systems, hardware, networking, databases and much more in the hopes of putting that knowledge to work for the betterment of the City of San Antonio. More than 100 people applied from various local colleges and technical institutes. After in-person interviews and a technical examination, the top 30 candidates were selected for the camp, which began Sept. 18. Rackspace also paid the boot camp candidates $12 an hour to attend the training.
Staci Marshall, Director of Rackspace University explained, ”Rackspace is a fast-growing company, and with that comes the availability of hundreds of high-paying, highly skilled jobs to San Antonio. We developed this boot camp in an effort to teach candidates the skills needed to be successful at Rackspace, while increasing the technical talent pool throughout the city.”
When the Boot Camp idea was presented to the City’s Economic Development Department, the City offered training funds through its partnership with the Alamo Community College District for any instructional material needed.
Barbara Ankamah, Economic Development Manager for the City of San Antonio added, ”The City of San Antonio is dedicated to increasing our overall technical expertise throughout the city. The Rackspace University Boot Camp is a great initiative that will help grow and train our IT workforce for the future. We are excited about the opportunity to help one of our fastest-growing local IT companies launch this innovative new training program.”
Rackspace University held a graduation ceremony for the 25 candidates who completed the training course, at its corporate headquarters. In attendance, were representatives from the Economic Development Department and ACCD as well as family members of the graduates. All candidates had an opportunity to interview for a full-time position at Rackspace after graduation.
Mr. Marshall continued, ”Our ultimate goal is to find a position within Rackspace for everyone who completes our training class. Rackspace’s vision is to continue with future boot camps, increasing technical expertise citywide, with the overall objective to help the city compete technologically with the larger cities in the U.S.”
