(The Hosting News) – After nearly a month of downtime, Sony has begun to restore the PlayStation Network globally, starting with North America. The initial restore is currently limited to chat, music streaming, and the feature most important to PlayStation users, online game play.
Upon initializing the restore, Sony stated through its blog, “We’re still working to confirm the security of the network infrastructure, as well as working with a variety of outside entities to confirm with them of the security of the system. Verifying the system security is vital for the process of restoration”.
Sony temporarily pulled the plug on the massive network last month after an extensive security breach occurred, possibly taking sensitive user information from nearly 100 million network accounts.
The time the network spent offline was meant to secure further user information while updating and rebuilding the network to better defend against hackers.
The total network downtime lasted 26 days, the length of which surprised many users.
In a later post related more specifically to the restore process, Sony urged its users, “Please note that these services will take a bit of time to be turned on and rolled out to the whole country. The process has begun and some states are being turned on now, so please be patient as we reach your city and state”.
The post also showed a U.S. map that displays live updates as to where service is restored. In the meantime, the company is recommending that PlayStation users update their firmware. Users are also required to reset account passwords.
Despite beginning network restoration, security questions remain. The government of Japan, where Sony is headquartered, has asked Sony to comply with further preventive measures before authorizing the restore. The country’s Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry has also asked Sony more specifically how it will restore consumer confidence due to the exposure of personal user data.
