(The Hosting News) – The amount of IPv4 addresses are running out. On Wednesday, also known as IPv6 Day, many companies including YouTube and Facebook will test the new protocol known as IPv6.
To accommodate for more IP addresses, IPv6 uses a longer address field to provide for new internet connections.
IPv6 day was announced earlier this year after the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority allocated its remaining IPv4 addresses to regional providers.
The 400+ companies participating in the protocol test will use the day to look for any problems that may occur with IPv6. Such concerns are operational as some systems were previously designed only for IPv4.
With the activation of IPv6 capability by many top websites, the new protocol will begin to sweep its way across the web.
