Most commercial and open source web applications are fairly easy to install. With a few permissions settings and database configurations, you can usually have even some of the more robust server-side scripts up and running for your blog hosting rather quickly. When it comes to upgrades, however, not all of them are equal. Some require you to essentially reinstall the system to upgrade, while others offer automated upgrades from within the applications.
Server-side web app upgrades have many advantages including:
- Reduces user error – When you upgrade manually, you run the risk of breaking something and bringing your website to a halt. With in-app upgrades, you may have very little to do other than initiating the upgrade process.
- Simplifies the process – This is especially useful if you had someone else install the software for you. Rather than have to get FTP involved, uploading scripts and setting permissions, your upgrade might be as simple as the click of a single button.
- Speed – A manual upgrade can take some time, and you may have to take your site offline to complete it. With an in-app upgrade, you can often have the new version up and running in a matter of minutes.
Any upgrade can be risky, but if you can reduce risk by upgrading your system from within, you might make your job a little easier. If the aforementioned benefits appear useful, you should look for web applications that have internal upgrade systems the next time you go web shopping.
