(The Hosting News) – China is no longer a priority for tech giant Yahoo!. The company recently left the Asian-based market, citing an adjustment to its “operations strategy,” according to a report from the BBC on Monday.
Visiting Yahoo!’s China homepage now leads to a farewell message; it also later redirects to the website for Alibaba, the content management company which formerly oversaw Yahoo!’s Chinese services.
And while it is somewhat of a surprise, it’s not necessarily a really big one. The company previously shut down its email offering in the country last month.
Yahoo! has reportedly been facing increasing competition in the heavily-censored Chinese internet market.
Since current Yahoo! CEO Marissa Mayer assumed the helm at the tech provider last June, the company has undergone a transformation that’s included a recent buyout of popular blogging service Tumblr.
Last month, Yahoo! reassumed its position as the top U.S. web destination for the first time since May of 2011, according to statistics from internet traffic monitor comScore.
