(The Hosting News) – Website security company, Trust Guard, comments on the recent security breach suffered by Zappos. “Why is this happening at such a high level when big companies know the importance of good website security?” Asked Dave Brandley, Trust Guard Co-founder.
Zappos recently informed customers that customer accounts have been compromised. According to Zappos CEO Tony Hsieh in a recent press release, credit card data was not affected, however, other sensitive information was compromised. Experts say Zappos customers are still at equal or greater risk.
Brandley, a website security expert said, “whether or not credit card numbers were taken doesn’t mean that customers are any less at risk and in fact might be MORE at risk. In the case of credit cards numbers, customers could simply cancel that credit card and put the worry behind them. However, when email addresses, passwords, addresses, and other sensitive information is compromised it’s an entirely new, larger issue that can continue for a long time. Things like identity theft, fraud, and phishing come into play and in those cases it’s difficult to even know you’ve been victimized.” Brandley then said that “people don’t seem to realize the extensive website security problem. Security experts are trying to change that with education and services, however, in some cases business owners just don’t take it seriously”.
The problem of website security is allegedly widespread, and seems to go further than Zappos. Atul Prakash, a professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science and doctoral students Laura Falk and Kevin Borders examined the Web sites of 214 financial institutions and discussed the findings in a recent interview … “To our surprise, design flaws that could compromise security were widespread and included some of the largest banks in the country,” Prakash said. “…The flaws leave cracks in security that hackers could exploit to gain access to private information and accounts.”.
“It’s a massive threat that everyone needs to be taking seriously”, said Brandley. “As more and more business’ are affected both business owners and customers will learn the importance of things like website security scanning, but unfortunately many people won’t realize the threat until it’s too late and they’ve been victimized. What they don’t realize is how easy it is to prevent a data breach to begin with. Business owners need to be secure, and customers need to limit shopping to secure sites. Look for website security scanning, and look for an SSL Certificate. The information is out there, it’s just about taking action and caution”.
